About the event
Much of the time when we think about saving and supporting the bees, we have the European honeybee in mind, but they are an invasive species and only make up a fraction of the worldwide bee population.
For this family-friendly workshop, we'll be focusing on building Bee Hotels for solitary, native bees like bumble, leafcutter, and mason bees. These little critters don't live in hives or produce honey in the way we typically think of, but they are important pollinators!
When you build a hotel for solitary bees, you're providing important habitat for them to rest and nest. Solitary, female bees will find their way to your vacant structure, where they can nest and make "bee bread", a nutrient-rich food for their offspring made from the pollen and nectar they collect. Plant some native flowers around your hotel and watch these friendly bees thrive!
